Forensic Measurement of the Refractive Index of Glass Fragments

rIQ 3™ is designed to measure the refractive index of glass fragments. rIQ 3™ stands for Refractive Index Quantification (version 3.0) and is built based upon the thermo-optical methodology defined by ASTM E1967. As such, it is an automated system which measures the refractive index of microscopic glass fragments by monitoring the change in refractive index of calibrated oils as they are heated and cooled.

rIQ 3™: the smart choice for measuring the refractive index of glass.

Using the thermal immersion method defined by ASTM E1967, rIQ 3™ analyzes many glass fragments at once, applying algorithms refined over years of forensic glass work to deliver high-precision results that exceed ASTM requirements for long-term stability and reproducibility. Each analysis is recorded on video, and every result — refractive index, sample identification and the environmental conditions at the time of measurement — is stored in a searchable database.

Depending on your requirements, rIQ 3™ brings together high-resolution digital imaging, precision thermal control, a phase-contrast microscope and its controlling electronics in one turnkey system. It is offered as a standalone package, as an add-on to a CRAIC microspectrophotometer — where the same fragments can also be measured for transmission, fluorescence and color spectra — or as an upgrade to an older refractive index system already in the field.
